These are but few of the many inspirations Eugenie Huang draws from to inform her jewelry line, Deka Ray. Ms. Huang Selway creates objects that seem like artifacts from a far away universe, collisions in materiality and construction. In her hands, polyhedra formed from brass tubing becomes flexible yet aggressive, laser-cut wood is rhythmically lashed together with shards of phosphorescent Lucite to create an angular, mathematically symmetric moth. Her work is otherworldly and technological in thought-process, yet imbued with the ambiance of the natural environment as a tactile, material influence. Growing up amidst of stacks of blueprints, art volumes, and music anthologies in the woods of North Carolina, Ms. Huang Selway first began making jewelry after reading a book about Alexander Calder at the age of 8. Between pursuing bachelors and masters degrees in architecture at MIT and Columbia, she spent a year in middle Ohio learning how to rebuild motorcycle parts and motors. She currently shares the NYC-based architectural practice Formactiv and has also apprenticed for conceptual jewel-smith atelier Trimetall in Cologne and with the late Jessica Rose in New York. |
